The Year of Simple Humor
I think we can all agree that the Superbowl 2021 commercials left us all with mixed feelings, some left us feeling reminiscent, a few left us disappointed, and some just plain confused...but hey! Isn’t that what living through a pandemic is all about?
The Superbowl is the largest stage for companies to advertise a new product or just to remind society that “hey we still have the best beer!” and we were pleasantly surprised by the range of commercials we got to see in 2021...Although I think we all miss the Budweiser puppy ads.
This year’s Superbowl commercials were definitely meme-worthy and full of simple humor many of us grew to love during the lockdown and although it may not have been the best round of ads fans have seen, we have major admiration to the creatives for pulling off what they did during a global pandemic with limited resources.
Here are our top 3 favorite Superbowl commercials of 2021!
BUD LIGHT: We have to give some major props to Budlight for really hitting home with their Lemonaid Seltzer commercial this round at the Superbowl. The ad and unique lemon metaphor accurately captured the essence of 2020 as a whole. Blissfully unaware of what the year had in store for society, this humorous ad shows friends reflecting on what “a lemon of a year” 2020 was with a rainstorm of lemons leaving baseball stadiums empty, weddings ruined, and people manically cutting their hair...sound familiar? Good riddance 2020!
M&M: This year M&M delivered a very corny and clever commercial that reflected how people’s true colors really showed thanks to quarantine. M&M touches on some popular memes and 2020 trends such as the “Karens” of society, gender reveals gone wrong, and mansplaining. All we know can hope is that 2021 will be the year to come together once again, maybe over some M&Ms.
ROCKET MORTGAGE: Taking the cake for one of the more humorous ads of 2021 is Rocket Mortgages “Certain is better” ad featuring comedian Tracy Morgan. Tracy takes us through hilarious scenarios in order to teach a family that homebuyers need to be certain when looking for a home. Rather than spoil each scenario in this review just go ahead and watch the ad. I promise it’s worth your time.
Whether you found the commercials a bit flat (like Matthew McConaughey) or a mountain top experience (like the new Paramount network), it’s always a highlight of our year to view creativity on display from some of the largest names in the advertising industry.
